WHAT TO EXPECT:
TOOLS
Here are some common tools and equipment used in our practice:
Acupuncture Needles: The primary tools used in acupuncture, these needles are usually made of stainless steel and come in various lengths and gauges. The needles are very thin, solid, and flexible, allowing for precise insertion.
Acupuncture Cupping Set: Cupping involves creating suction on the skin to improve blood flow and promote healing. Cupping sets typically include glass or plastic cups that are placed on the skin and can be suctioned using heat.
Acupuncture Massage Tools: Various massage tools such as gua sha boards, rolling massage tools, or acupressure tools can be used to complement acupuncture treatment by stimulating the points or relieving muscle tension
PROCESS
Our acupuncture process typically includes the following steps:
Initial Consultation: During your first visit, Dr. McKay will discuss your medical history, current symptoms, and any concerns or goals you may have. She will ask questions about your lifestyle, diet, sleep patterns, and emotional well-being to gain a comprehensive understanding of your health.
Diagnosis: Dr. McKay will then conduct a diagnosis by observing your physical appearance, taking your pulse at various points, and examining your tongue. These diagnostic techniques are used in traditional Chinese medicine to assess the flow of Qi (vital energy) and identify any imbalances or blockages.
Treatment Plan: Based on the diagnosis, Dr. McKay will create a personalized treatment plan. This plan may involve a series of acupuncture sessions, combined with other complementary techniques such as cupping.
Preparation: You will be asked to lie down on a comfortable treatment table, and Dr. McKay will ensure your privacy and provide a gown or sheets to cover your body. The treatment area, usually the arms, legs, abdomen, or back, will be cleaned with alcohol swabs.
Needle Insertion: Dr. McKay will gently insert thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on your body. The needles are typically inserted to a depth of a few millimeters to a centimeter, depending on the location. You may feel a slight tingling, heaviness, or dull ache, but the process is generally not painful.
Needle Stimulation: After the needles are inserted, Dr McKay may stimulate them in various ways. This can include gentle twisting, rotating, or gently applying heat or electrical stimulation to the needles. The stimulation helps to enhance the flow of Qi and promote healing.
Needle Retention: The needles are usually left in place for about 15 to 30 minutes. During this time, you will have the opportunity to relax and rest comfortably. Many people find acupuncture sessions to be quite relaxing and may even fall asleep during the treatment.
Needle Removal: Once the designated time has passed, Dr. McKay will carefully remove the needles. You may feel a slight sensation as the needles are withdrawn, but it is generally painless.
Follow-up and Additional Treatments: Depending on your condition and treatment plan, you may be advised to schedule regular acupuncture sessions for a certain duration. Dr. McKay will monitor your progress, adjust the treatment as needed, and provide any additional recommendations for your overall health and well-being.
OUTCOMES
Acupuncture outcomes and results can vary depending on the individual, the condition being treated, and various other factors. Here are some common outcomes and results associated with acupuncture:
Pain Relief: Acupuncture is often used to alleviate pain, and many people experience significant pain reduction after acupuncture treatments. It has been found to be particularly effective in treating conditions such as back pain, migraines, osteoarthritis, and postoperative pain.
Stress Reduction: Acupuncture is known for its relaxation and stress-reducing effects. It can help calm the nervous system, promote a sense of well-being, and improve sleep quality. Many people report feeling more relaxed and less anxious after acupuncture sessions.
Improved Function and Range of Motion: Acupuncture can enhance physical function and improve the range of motion in joints. It is commonly used to address musculoskeletal issues such as sports injuries, tendonitis, and fibromyalgia.
Enhanced Well-being: Acupuncture is believed to help balance the body's energy flow, or Qi, and promote overall well-being. Some people report improvements in digestion, better immune function, increased energy levels, and a general sense of vitality and harmony.
Adjunct to Other Treatments: Acupuncture is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments. It can help enhance the effectiveness of other treatments, reduce side effects, and improve overall treatment outcomes.
Individualized Approach: Acupuncture treatments are tailored to each individual's unique condition and constitution. The personalized approach takes into account the individual's specific symptoms, underlying imbalances, and overall health goals.
It's important to note that while acupuncture has been used for centuries and has shown positive outcomes in many cases, individual responses can vary. Some people may experience immediate relief, while others may require multiple sessions to see noticeable improvements. Additionally, acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner, but it may not be suitable for everyone or every condition. It's always advisable to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine if acupuncture is an appropriate treatment option for your specific needs.
